Beyond the Classroom

Some of the most important lessons in childhood are learnt beyond the classroom walls.

They are learnt whilst balancing across a fallen branch, listening carefully to birdsong, performing a shabad with friends, stepping into a swimming pool for the first time or discovering that something which once seemed impossible has become achievable through patience and perseverance. They are learnt through shared experiences, moments of wonder and the quiet confidence that grows when children are given opportunities to explore the world around them.

At Sikh Heritage Girls School, we believe children deserve a rich and varied childhood, filled with opportunities to explore, create, perform, move and discover. Whilst classrooms are important places of learning, some of the most memorable experiences happen beyond them. Through Forest School, green outdoor spaces, educational visits and opportunities to engage with the wider world, children develop curiosity, resilience and a growing appreciation for the beauty and diversity that surrounds them.

From their very first week at school, children benefit from specialist sports and music teaching, not because we expect every child to become an athlete or a musician, but because we believe every child deserves the opportunity to discover what brings her joy, confidence and a sense of achievement. Through expert guidance and carefully planned experiences, children are encouraged to challenge themselves, develop new skills and experience the satisfaction that comes from perseverance and practice.

From the Spring Term, children begin swimming lessons and violin lessons, experiences that not only broaden horizons but also help children develop courage, concentration and self-belief. For many children, these moments become cherished memories and the beginning of lifelong interests and passions.

Learning beyond the classroom helps children understand that education is not confined to four walls. It is found in the natural world, in shared experiences, in music and movement, in relationships and in the countless opportunities that allow children to wonder, question and discover. These experiences enrich childhood and help children develop the confidence to embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
