Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

A place where curiosity, confidence and character take root.

What if the strongest start in education began not with answers, but with questions?

What kind of person might a child become when she spends her days reading stories, asking questions, exploring green outdoor spaces, learning through play and discovery, and growing within a community where she is truly known?

At Sikh Heritage Girls School, we believe childhood should be filled with curiosity, belonging and joy. The Early Years Foundation Stage is far more than the beginning of a child's education; it is the foundation upon which confidence, character, relationships and a lifelong love of learning are built. It is a time when children begin to discover who they are, how they learn and how they can contribute positively to the world around them.

Every child arrives with her own interests, personality, strengths and story. Through small class sizes and strong relationships, we take the time to know each child as an individual, celebrating her uniqueness whilst helping her develop a strong sense of belonging within our school family. Children quickly learn that their voice matters, their ideas are valued and that learning is something to be embraced with enthusiasm and confidence.

Rooted in our motto, Born to Love. Live to Do., our EYFS provision combines high expectations with warmth, structure with creativity and ambition with care.

We want our children to leave Reception with far more than the ability to read, write and work with numbers. We want them to leave with curiosity, confidence and character; with the courage to ask thoughtful questions, the perseverance to keep trying when something feels difficult and the kindness to make a positive difference to those around them.

Children deserve a childhood rich in stories, conversation, discovery, beauty, belonging and purpose. In a world that can sometimes feel hurried, we believe there is great value in giving children time to wonder, to explore, to create and to delight in the joy of learning. Academic foundations matter deeply, but so too do relationships, imagination and the experiences that help children grow into thoughtful, resilient and compassionate young people.

Research consistently highlights the importance of the early years in shaping future learning, wellbeing and development. It is for this reason that our EYFS provision has been carefully designed to provide children with the strongest possible start, combining educational excellence with warmth, joy and a deep understanding of childhood itself.
