What if creativity is not simply something children do, but something that helps them understand who they are?

Children are naturally imaginative. They sing before they can read, roll in the grass before they can explain and create long before they realise that creativity is something to be celebrated. We believe these early experiences of art, music, movement and imaginative play are not extras to be fitted around the curriculum, but essential parts of childhood that help children make sense of themselves and the world around them.

At Sikh Heritage Girls School, we want children to experience beauty, wonder and joy in their everyday lives. Research increasingly highlights the importance of creative experiences in supporting language development, emotional wellbeing, problem-solving and self-expression. For this reason, opportunities to create, perform, imagine and explore are woven throughout our EYFS provision, allowing children to develop confidence, curiosity and a growing appreciation for the arts.

Imagination is nurtured through stories, role play and open-ended experiences that encourage children to think creatively and express their ideas in different ways. Whether transforming a construction area into a castle, retelling a favourite story through drama, experimenting with colour and texture or creating representations of the world around them, children are given opportunities to communicate thoughts and feelings that are often difficult to express through words alone.

Music forms an important part of daily life in our EYFS. From their very first week at school, children benefit from specialist music teaching, not because we expect every child to become a professional musician, but because we recognise the joy, confidence and discipline that music can bring. Through singing, listening, movement and performance, children develop rhythm, coordination and an appreciation for music as a powerful form of expression.

From their very first week, girls have specialist music lessons and take part in half-termly music workshops. Music - playing an instrument, understanding music theory, singing and rhyming all develop both sides of the brain, which is crucial for future creativity and problem solving.

Creativity extends far beyond paint and pencils. It can be found in dance, storytelling, movement, music, problem-solving and imaginative play. Children are encouraged to experiment, take risks and understand that creativity is often about the process rather than the finished product. We want them to recognise that mistakes are part of learning and that original ideas should be celebrated rather than feared.

Beauty in art matters deeply to us. We believe children should grow up surrounded by beautiful books, carefully chosen resources, natural materials and thoughtfully designed spaces that invite curiosity and inspire wonder. Through exposure to art, music, craftsmanship and the beauty of the natural world, children develop an appreciation for the richness and diversity of human creativity and begin to understand that beauty has the power to inspire, uplift and connect us.

Above all, we believe children deserve a rich and varied childhood, filled with opportunities to explore, create, perform, move and discover. We want every child to leave our EYFS with the confidence to express herself, the courage to share her ideas and the understanding that creativity is not reserved for a talented few, but something that belongs to all of us. In nurturing imagination, wonder and self-expression, we hope to help children discover not only what they can create, but who they are becoming.
