Fundamental British Values
How do children learn to participate confidently and respectfully in modern Britain?
At Sikh Heritage Girls School, the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs are actively promoted through the curriculum and everyday life of the school.
These values sit comfortably alongside our Sikh ethos. Girls learn that strong personal beliefs can coexist with respect for the rights, freedoms and beliefs of others, and that living well within a diverse society requires both conviction and responsibility.
British Values in Practice
Pupils learn about democracy through discussion, pupil voice and opportunities such as School Council, where they experience representation, listening to different viewpoints and participating in decisions.
Through PSHE, History and wider school life, girls develop an age-appropriate understanding of the rule of law, why laws exist and how they protect individuals and communities.
Individual liberty is explored through questions of choice, rights, responsibility and personal freedom within the law. Girls are encouraged to think independently, express reasoned views and understand that freedom also carries responsibility for how our choices affect others.
Our curriculum in RE, Philosophy and Worldviews, PSHE and the wider humanities gives pupils regular opportunities to encounter people with different religions, beliefs and perspectives. Girls learn that people may disagree deeply and still treat one another with dignity and respect.
Alongside this, pupils develop an age-appropriate understanding of the protected characteristics within the Equality Act 2010 and learn why prejudice, discrimination and unfair treatment must be recognised and challenged.
Our aim is for pupils to leave SHGS able to participate confidently in British society: informed about their rights and responsibilities, comfortable with difference, able to disagree respectfully and ready to contribute positively to the communities of which they are part.
