How do children learn courage, perseverance and kindness?

Not through being told about them, but through experiencing them every day.

At Sikh Heritage Girls School, we believe education should help children become not only knowledgeable, but also thoughtful, compassionate and resilient young people. Whilst academic foundations matter deeply, so too do the qualities that enable children to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives. Character is therefore not something we teach in isolation, but something that is woven through relationships, routines and the countless interactions that make up each day.

From the moment children join our EYFS, they begin to understand what it means to belong to a community where kindness matters, effort is celebrated and every individual is valued. Through carefully established routines and warm, supportive relationships, children learn that they are capable of making positive choices, overcoming challenges and contributing to the happiness and wellbeing of others.

Research consistently highlights the importance of children's social and emotional development in supporting long-term wellbeing, academic achievement and healthy relationships. For this reason, we place great importance on helping children develop self-awareness, emotional literacy and independence. Adults support children in recognising and understanding their feelings, managing disappointment, resolving disagreements respectfully and developing the confidence to persevere when something feels difficult.

Our school values of self-awareness, discipline, effort, perseverance, courage and humility are lived rather than merely spoken about. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their belongings, care for their environment, show consideration towards others and recognise that mistakes are a natural and valuable part of learning. Success is celebrated, but so too are kindness, determination and acts of thoughtfulness that often go unnoticed by the wider world.

Daily opportunities for reflection and simran help children develop inner calm, gratitude and a growing awareness of themselves and others. Through acts of seva, children begin to understand that even the smallest actions can make a meaningful difference. Whether helping a friend, tidying shared resources, showing compassion to someone who is upset or contributing to the life of the classroom, children discover that service and kindness are not extraordinary acts, but habits that can shape everyday life.

Relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We believe children flourish when they feel known, valued and loved, and when they experience the security of belonging to something bigger than themselves. Through strong relationships with staff, meaningful friendships and opportunities to learn alongside older role models within our school community, children quickly develop confidence and a sense of responsibility towards others.

Independence is nurtured gradually and thoughtfully. Children are encouraged to make decisions, solve problems, manage their own needs and take increasing ownership of their learning. We want children to develop the confidence to try new things, the resilience to persevere when faced with challenge and the courage to recognise that growth often comes through effort rather than instant success.

Above all, we want every child to leave our EYFS with a strong sense of who she is becoming. We want her to know that she is valued, that her voice matters and that she has the ability to contribute positively to the world around her. In doing so, we hope she develops not only the confidence to flourish herself, but also the compassion to help others flourish too.
